I have been coming here before my boys dropped when I met Jenny. I took Jenny here to See Fury on our first date. She suggested it. All you Can EAT POPCORN AND ICEES!!!! I love Jenny

After moving away a year ago, The Tivoli Theatre wins for Very Best Movie Theater and Very Best Popcorn!
(5)Charles F.
We've been coming to the Tivoli for 15 years. The first time, we were surprised that there was an organ concert, harking back to the days of silent movies. I can't begin to tell you the number of movie theaters that have been chopped into smaller theaters, including the LaGrange and the long gone Hinsdale, Oak Brook, and UA Cinema theaters. The fact that the Tivoli is still one screen in a large theater shows what going to the movies used to be like.
(5)Meghan M.
I went with my family for the first time tonight. What a great family place! The seats are very comfortable and they have booster seats for the kids. The tickets are cheap and the refills are free. We were there on a Saturday, so we got to enjoy the organ player before the show. I will definitely be back.

I know I'm supposed to love this place but the first thing that hits you when you walk in is the musty-I'm-in-someone's-attic smell. It's old and it looks, smells and feels it. Perhaps I just don't appreciate an organist--never have and likely never will. I like that they have films rather than movies-I saw The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out a Window here, so I like that aspect about it.
(3)Nick G.
loved this place as a kid and still do! great theatre
(5)Jessica C.
Came here for the Dawes/Jayhawkes concert (February 2015) and true to everyone's comments, it's a lovely vintage theatre with what the Jayhawkes lead singer called "the best stage acoustics he's ever experienced." I'd recommend it - only took off a star because if you're short, like me 4'11'', your view might get blocked. I know, it's not fair, it's not really their fault, it's not a new stadium theatre, but thought I should mention it.

Just saw Interstellar at the Tivoli in "35mm". One word, terrible. My eyes still see quality and resolution. Something must have been very wrong with the way they set this up in the projection room. The manager was telling me before I went in that it will look different. He wasn't kidding. I can't believe I paid $8. Absolutely no clarity in the image. It was worse than watching it on a DVD. Film is film. The resolution should have been excellent. Instead it was a blurry mess. Wednesday is the last day it will be shown. I challenge any film buff to see and report back. I love the Tivoli and will continue to see movies there. They should have gotten a tech in there to verify that the projector was set up properly. Shame on you Tivoli! All in al I must say that most of the time films there are Digital and look and sound exemplary.
(2)Roger L.
Today was my first visit to Tivoli Theatre. What drew me in was a chance to see Interstellar in 35mm! Tivoli Theatre was absolutely beautiful. The pictures posted on yelp and the theatre's website do not do it justice. The staff was warm and friendly. I was really astounded to find this theatre had such a full staff running about. Manning every station, escorting people through, even cleaning up during and after the movie. Pricing for tickets and concessions is perfect! I would even suggest they charge more considering what a terrific job the staff does in running this theatre. I enjoyed my first visit to Tivoli Theatre and I really hope they play more films in 35mm soon!
(5)Kevin S.
The Tivoli can not be rated by anyone less then 5 stars! IMO, this is the most awesome movie theater in the Midwest! I give it 5 stars based on the ambiance, affordability, and customer service. The kids working here are very friendly and polite, how many times can you say that! The affordability of the Tivoli is unbelievable, ticket prices are low and there is FREE refills on ANY size popcorn and drink! Finally the ambiance of the theater is unmatched by any megaplex theater! The architecture is beautiful in this fully restored old theater. If you haven't been here, you don't know what your missing!
(5)Renita M.
Wait, I've never written a review of the Tivoli? How is that possible? This place is a gem. I first came here to see Neil Gaiman read and it was the perfect location for it. Since then I've been back a few times for special events. It's the perfect blend of old and new -- one big beautifully restored theater, old-fashioned ticket booths, velvet seats and curtains, the organ that plays before shows, but with plenty of modern amenities too. Standing outside in the snow, waiting for the doors to open to see a holiday classic (in our case, A Christmas Story) is like this great little small-town experience. You buy your tickets from the little booths, smell the popcorn smells, file into this lovely theater... Tickets are very affordable, the atmosphere is great, and it's generally an awesome place. I'm so glad the Tivoli is around.
(5)Emily R.
This place was extremely awesome! I loved the theater itself. There was a great ambiance which screamed "Theater of yesteryear". They still had one of those old school ticket booths which was awesome. When you walk inside the screen room is decorated with beautiful architecture. It reminds me of a smaller less intricate version of the Cadillac palace theater. The screen was kind of small but for 5 bucks to see the movie I can't really complain. Definitely check it out.
(5)Kristen L.
I hope this place never closes! I love the Tivoli so much. Old school historical theatre, pretty good selection of movies (they're even getting movies that more recently came out now!). Old school but very clean and well maintained. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Great deals on movies. Fondest memories at the Tivoli include watching the Nutcracker Ballet there in the winter with my mother :)
(5)Greg B.
Great theater! I've seen movies as well as bands here. The seats are comfortable and the theater is beautiful. It's a wonderful alternative to the typical chain movie theater
(5)Gemma K.
Well, I will just step right up on the band wagon with the rest of my Yelp friends (and I am in good company) because this little throw back movie house is a true gem. From the marquee outside, to the girl selling tickets in an actual ticket booth, to the old fashioned containers for popcorn, to the velvet seats housed in a jumbo movie theater this blast from the past is clean, fun, and utterly charming. Glance at the filigree walls, the framed stage, and you will expect to see the Phantom of the Opera. The chandeliers from the entry way on in are quite lovely and the guys selling popcorn are all dolls. These are just some of the very special nuances that have all but been forgotten these days. But what will totally steal your heart is the unbelievably gifted guy knocking himself out on this huge organ prior to the start of the show. And there is no lacking in applause for him either. What is his super sweet finish, you might ask? A rousing rendition of Hooray for Hollywood, and with that the organ lowers and he vanishes from sight! Not only will you enjoy the film, you will get what you paid for, and be thoroughly entertained in the process. As you leave the theatre, you are offered complimentary mints and are thanked for your patronage. After it's all over you may find yourself blinking as to what just happened here, but I guarantee you will be back.
(5)B A.
This is a gorgeous old theater and it is reasonably priced. This theater is a gem the likes of which we will probably never see built new again. It shows last run movies but that's okay. It's typically a full house. I hope it stays around for a long time to come!
(5)Devon W.
The Tivoli is my favorite! I love the old school vibe, the classic uniforms, the HUGE theater space, and best of all... the low low prices! The Tivoli packs a customer-centric punch that most modern theaters ignore. When I leave the Tivoli, I'm never worried about the 15 dollars I spent on popcorn, the long wait for the film, or the broken seat I endured that was jammed in between 4 rowdy teens... no no! When I leave the Tivoli, I simply can't wait to go back again! At the Tivoli: 1. Prices are reasonable 2. Food is fresh 3. People are welcoming, friendly, and eager to help 4. Bathrooms are clean 5. Seats are new and there's enough seating for a football stadium (Thus eradicating the need to arrive hours in advance or end up sitting next to some annoying party) 6. There's an organist that plays on weekends! - Huge bonus 7. They're not afraid to play classic films on busy days 8. You get free candy after the show If you've never been to the Tivoli.. try it out! If you HAVE been, I'm sure you don't need convincing to go back. :-)
(5)Davo B.
my favorite movie theater. Reminds you of the good old days. Been here several times and its always been enjoyable
(5)Cinnamon M.
Not only is this the most beautiful retro theater I've ever been in, but the seats are new and comfy with drink holders. The movie's picture and sound was perfect! Instead of going to the larger theaters, I'm going to wait until my pic of choice comes here! Clean and beautiful!
(5)Mary Pam P.
What's not to like.....charming, quaint and very pretty. A nice change from the mobbed megaplex theaters and walkable to a post movie dinner or cocktail.
(5)Tony H.
I love the Tivoli. My first experience here was Christmas '11, seeing "Holiday Inn" for the first time with my good friend Melissa H. You definitely step back in time walking in for the first visit. The theatre is split into Aisles! Step in the moviehouse and you feel like you're in a dream. The Tivoli has been beautifully restored. For Holiday Inn, they had the old pipe organ cranking, and people were happily singing along to the carols on the screen. Then the lights went down, the movie started up and people started applauding! When was the last time you saw that? Applause after every musical number. THIS is what the Golden Age of moviegoing must have been like, and I am now a convert to the throwback ways. Free refills on any size popcorn or drink, and a Classic Rewards card enhance your value. Plus, the last Friday of each month sees a special midnight showing of classic films. I have seen Raiders of the Lost Ark, Back to the Future and Planes, Tranes and Automobiles during these showings, and they are always great times. I love the company that has committed to running classic theatres like the Tiv, and only wish they had gotten to the DuPage Theatre in Lombard before its untimely demise. Let's all go to the movies!
(5)Jessica M.
Hands down, this is the best theatre I've ever been to. It's beautiful! And we loved the organist who played before the show. What an experience.
(5)Chrissy W.
I love that I live 5 minutes from this place. I love that they show a myriad of Christmas movies. I love that they have popcorn seasoning (free of charge). I love that they are a classic old theater, and haven't changed. I love the organ player. The Christmas tunes before the holiday movies. The cheap tickets. The cheap popcorn. The refillable popcorn and beverages. The BF and I came here the other night for Scrooged. The sing-along before the movie was great. But even better was the sing-along at the end of the movie. People were totally getting into it. We had a blast. If you've never been to the Tiv, make your way over there for a cheap movie in a high quality old school theater. CLASSIC. Beautiful. Awesome.
(5)Kristin Z.
The place is amazing! Beautiful restored classic theater. The staff is helpful and friendly. Movies are inexpensive and you get free refills on your popcorn and soda, no matter what size you order. The picture and sound are great too! Can't wait to go back!!
(5)Missy R.
It a beautiful 1928 movie theater with a pipe organ. The organist arouse from the pit and played for 20 minutes. The seats were nice and new with cup holders. The bathrooms were neat and clean. The staff was friendly and helpful.
(5)Jeff G.
Great place to watch a movie. Clean charming comfortable seats and real popcorn popped there with free refills. $5 for a movie?!??! Nice friendly and helpful employees. I just wish they had an intermission for 2 hour plus movies I love this place !!!
(5)Scott S.
Totally loved this place. Went for my first time on a Friday night. Located right in downtown Downers Grove. The classic marquee sign outside is awesome. Arrived kind of early so enjoyed some ice cream at the place down the block (super packed there). When it was time to do into the theater, I was very pleased with the $5 ticket prices. They also have free refills on popcorn and drinks. A little stand for you to add your own popcorn salt flavoring was also pretty convenient. The decor in there looks great. Just walking in there should put you in a good mood. The staff was friendly and the place was super clean. The highlight was the organist playing before the previews. The dude killed it! I was impressed. The movie 42 is what was showing and he played Take Me Out to the Ball Game....how clever. I could of left right then and there and would have probably though that I got my moneys worth. Only minor drawback is that there's only one screen so you're at the mercy of seeing whatever they're playing on that given day. And the parking in that area can kinda suck sometimes. Other than that, it was a perfect night out and I'll definitely be coming back.
(5)Casey W.
Best movie theater in the midwest with friendly staff cheap tickets and a gorgeous interior. Cant get more historic than this!
(5)Meredith B.
The Tivoli is one of my favorite places! The theatre itself is a restored beauty. I love the attention to details on the ornate ceilings- what a relic of the past! The service is always excellent- everyone is polite and accommodating. The price- you just can't beat it! The Tivoli makes watching a movie a special treat- it brings the magic back to the cinema. I can't rave about this place enough- if you haven't been, such a great place for all ages!
(5)Roseanne S.
What a great blend of old and new. According to my DG homeboy-friend, Tivoli is a classic. Hell, even the Geico gecko paid it a visit in a commercial. We had been wanting to see Skyfall since it came out but was never able to get to the regular theater. On Christmas Eve, we were looking up showtimes for Skyfall and they were pretty limited but we saw a 7pm showing at Tivoli. Since I had never been, we decided it would be the perfect time to go. The theatre is located in such a picturesque downtown Downers location. There's a shop on the corner that has music playing which you can hear as you walk down the sidewalk. The theatre is old and beautiful. Even the ticket counter is that classic outdoor curvy window, but you get them from the inside. The best part is the tickets were super cheap. I think it was $5/person. Remember when all the theaters were that cheap? Of course the movies they show here are on their second showing, but if you're willing to wait a month to see a movie, it's well worth it. They have all of the regular theater food, though we didn't get any. What I like about this theatre and what separates it from others, is that there is only one theater room. They didn't change it to accommodate more screens to make more money. Simple and wonderful. The inside of the actual theater area is beautiful. The classic design and setup takes you back to a different time. I hear they also play a giant organ before shows on some days. I would love to hear that. The sound quality of the movie was great and the seats were really comfortable. The arm rest even goes back so you can sit close to the person next to you. I love this theater and I can't wait to come back.
(5)Javier D.
The Best theatre around hands down...I remember seeing Predator, Dirty Dancing, Big, The Great Outdoors, and countless other movies growing up in DG at this theatre. It is truly a special place that has housed so many good memories.
(5)Kathleen M.
I am so glad I got to visit this theatre, it's just terrific. I usually find older theaters full of charm and hard on my butt! This was the happy exception, new comfortable chairs. It is clean and modern inside, even has great washrooms. It is like the Music Box Theatre downtown with a face lift! This theater had all kinds of beauty and architectural details that make your eyes excited to see them. It also has a magnificent organ with a spirited young man who just plays the heck out of it. I am very happy that The Big Read included a film here as part of their activities. If you get a chance, come and enjoy something here. Our Big Read tickets were only five dollars, just like a foot long only more fun.
(5)Melissa A.
Gorgeous, historic theater located in the heart of downtown Downers Grove. I came on a Saturday to watch a movie and was lucky enough to catch the organ performance! I love that this theater plays second run movies for only $5. The theater is well kept and the seats are plush and comfy. I love the sophisticated feel of classic cinemas and I will be back to see more movies in the future.
(5)Jessica G.
When I was a kid, this was where we went to see movies. I have fond memories of things like Ghostbusters, Star Wars (not sure which one), Raider of the Lost Ark (the heart one) and Dances with Wolves. Several times. It's a bit different from back in the day - it's been kept up nicely on the inside. Fairly comfortable seats and it doesn't feel like we were wedged in. The bathroom is much smaller than I remembered (and I also vaguely remember that you used to have to go downstairs for the bathrooms) but it was not an issue, even though there were a lot of people waiting. We were there for a book talk and it made a very nice venue for that sort of a gathering. Good sound, good sight lines and I also loved that they had the organ player playing. Great neighborhood, single-screen theater and somewhere I will want to go back to again.
(5)Joseph P.
This isn't the most modern theatre out there but I really like the old style of this theatre. You can come here to get a great deal on a movie that has been out for a while.
(5)Andrew M.
This place is the best! Not only can you get two tickets a popcorn and drink for under $20 but you don't feel like you are giving anything up in exchange for the cheap price. My girlfriend and I have gone more times than I can count. If you get there early there is a guy playing the organ on stage before the movie. Oh and I almost forgot the best part: the place is CLEAN!! No sticky floors; no disgusting bathrooms; no popcorn all over the floor.
(5)Alex K.
I have been going to this theater since I was a wee little tyke with my grandmother back in the day and now with my girlfriend. I love this theater it has a real sentimental old school building feel to it!!! The prices are amazing as well and the staff is very nice and professional!!!
(5)Andrew G.
What an awesome theater. They always have great movies at a very fair price and I have a lot of fond memories coming here with my family.
(5)Sara M.
What can I say that hasn't already been said? Oh, maybe, possibly my most favorite thing about the Tivoli is that they always have one person on staff with a cognitive disability and/or physical disability. Way to go, Tiv! Oh, and how about that time they let one of the local grade schools host their talent show on their stage? How many times can I say it- I love businesses that support their community! On top of those unique tidbits, this place is everything the other posters said. A huge one-screen theater located in the heart of Downtown Downers Grove, the Tivoli is one of the first "talkie" movie theaters in the country. I think that gives it cool points all by itself. The theater is now owned by Classic Cinemas, so they play movies movies generally about a month or two after their theatrical release, like most of the other Classic Cinema theaters. Because of that, the prices are dirt cheap to see a movie and to eat- where else can you see a film for $4 with unlimited refills on popcorn?? And before your movie you even get a show while the organist plays until the previews start. Can this theater get any cooler?
(5)Samantha D.
I love this theater. My husband and I try to go out once a month even if it is just to see a movie. This time around we decided to see Batman at the Tivoli Theater. I absolutely adored it. It was so beautiful and elegant inside it is hard to even describe. I felt as if I was living in the Renaissance, it truly has it's charm to it. The movie experience was great as well. We had some popcorn and soda (prices are just like a regular movie theater). We will return here again shortly because I really fell in love with this place. The staff was very pleasant as well!!
(4)William K.
Did you know that the Tivoli shows old Christmas movies over the holidays? Yeah, me neither. I went to see White Christmas with Kat last night, and it was a truly wonderful experience. The sound and the picture quality was rotten. But the theater is absolutely gorgeous. They had the organ playing and someone singing Christmas carols before the movie. The place was packed, and the crowd clapped after every musical number in the show. It was a wonderful, positive vibe throughout the whole evening. It's hard to describe, but it was almost like watching an old Christmas movie on TV in a big family room with a thousand of your closest friends. Ha! So, it's an effortless 5 stars for the Tiv. I'll be back next year. It's a Wonderful Life! yow, bill
(5)Caroline C.
I LOVE the Tiv. I grew up going to this theatre and love everything about it. It's a classic theatre with an old fashioned feel to it but with the comforts of modern seats. The organ player that plays before the movie starts is a huge plus, also. The popcorn is so good and we often have to get refills even before the movie starts. It gets movies later than other movie theaters but the wait is worth it. Nothing can beat a $5 ticket.
(5)Kai R.
Wonderful theatre. Seats are very comfortable and just a nice theatre all around.
(4)Wesley S.
The Tivoli Theater in Downers Grove is a wonderfully restored theater that is still used to screen films. It is one of the best film screening venues in terms of ambiance. Its sound system, screen, etc are about average. The Tivoli is a very nice place to see a film. I have never seen the old-time theaters, but I presume that The Tivoli restoration is fairly faithful. The theater has a stage and a drop-down section for the organ. (Live organ music precedes film screenings.) The seats are upholstered, although the armrests are the more practical plastic modern design, with cup-holders. The theater is carpeted throughout. The Tivoli has not been carved up into multiple screens. It is a single space, as it probably was in the past. Entering the seating area has somewhat the feel of seating oneself for a live performance in, say, the Auditorium Theater. Ambiance aside, the technical features, such as screen size and quality, sound system, projector, and so on are about average for a major cinema. The Tivoli is a fine venue for films, whose well restored grandeur adds considerably to the viewing experience. I love seeing a film at The Tivoli. I recommend it to other Yelpers.
(4)Jillian H.
I had my first movie experience at the Tivoli. Wow! What a great old historic and well maintained theater. It's great to see an old downtown theater thrive. The interior is French Renaissance with a Wurlitzer Pipe Organ and a velvet curtain. We went to the midnight showing of The Big Lebowski. Great experience and we will definitely return.
(5)Kymberly J.
The theater gave tours this past Saturday from 10 to noon. Even though it was free I never imagined a line around the block. Apparently with the mass email, a write up in the paper and a Facebook notice, half of the western 'burbs came out. They have done tours before and never had quite the turn out. Unfortunately we never got the full tour because of the crowd. While waiting in line for almost two hours in the sun the staff brought out water and kept us up to date of the situation. When we got near the door they realized that we were not going to get in even after they extended the number of tours. They ended up letting the excess into the theater where the owner gave a short lecture about the theater's history and then let us roam around the building including behind the stage, down in the basement and the back of the bowling alley. Staff was all over giving impromptu short talks about the inner workings of the beautifully historic building. They were so nice and accommodating - I was super impressed as they could have said "screw it" and sent us all packing.
(5)Shawna S.
By far my new favorite theater. Prices can't be beat. $5 movie ticket, refills on all sizes. Had a date night for two for 20 bucks. Very comfortable seats with adjustable arm rests. Beautiful scenery and love the organ player on Friday and Saturdays. Can't wait to see another movie there. Great for a date night.
(5)Sarah L.
What's not to love about the Tivoli?! (Well, there's a few tiny things, but that will come later.) First and foremost, I LOVE that they have resurrected the midnight movie series on Friday nights. I think it's the fourth Friday of the month, but do check the website to verify. I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark with some friends last weekend, and it was an absolute blast to see it on the big screen. The old school charm of the Tivoli is pervasive throughout the whole place, from the marquee to the concessions to the live organ player who entertains you before the feature. But thanks to some updates, the seats are modern and comfy and the sound system no longer has the maddening echo effect it did when I came here as a kid. Best of both worlds, right? The aforementioned little annoyances: - Parking can be a hassle if the train station hasn't emptied out yet. - The queuing system for the midnight movie was not immediately apparent when we arrived last week. There was quite the line, which we joined before realizing that you had to first purchase your tickets at the box office and then join the line to enter the theater. We sent one member of our group to get the tickets, and luckily he ran back to us right before we would have hit the ticket taker. Nothing a little signage and/or some ushers couldn't fix for next month (hint, hint).
(4)LOIS B.
I am sure there are an abundance of memories in this theater, but I have a couple of MAJOR issues that put a damper on my visit. First, I do not live in Downers Grove so I had to drive. Allow an additional minimum of 20 minutes to find a parking spot and then walk to the theater. Second, dress like you are in Miami Beach in the middle of summer, even if it is the middle of winter here and the temperature in the single digits. I asked an employee if it was always this uncomfortably warm and he responded with a resounding "YES". Aside from those, it is a great old fashioned single stage theater. And I must admit, I totally enjoyed the organ which is from 1924.
(3)Anastacia B.
I LOVE this little theater. I've been ccoming here since I was a little kid and they had the movie star posters on the back wall and had a $1.50 admission. Their popcorn is as good as movie popcorn gets. You get one free refill on that and sodas. They did a rehab a few years ago and kept the charm of the old theater feel. Bonus is the organ player who entertains before the movie starts. THE place to go see second run movies. Actually it might be best to let movies go to second run so you can hightail it over here.
(5)Ryan O.
This a great classic theater with a touch of newness. Has the classic layout but with a great sound system and screen. They started doing a classic movie midnight showing on the last Friday of the month too. I been to a few of them so far and they are great! Seeing classics like the Ghostbusters and Back to the Future on the big screen was amazing. The best part to is that everyone who goes. People dress up and everyone is there to share the joy of the same thing. This place has been around for a long time and I hope it stays around a lot longer.
(5)John S.
Loved going to the Tivoli to see the Artest. Classic style film in a great classic venue. The Tivoli is a reminder of the way things used to be (and should still be). This theater has been very nicely restored and retains all the great features of a classic cinima. The outisde of the building is in great condition from the lighted marquee to the booth that ticket seller stands in everything is just as it was in the old days. The theater itself is amazing. All the wood work on the walls is restored. On weekends they even have an organist before the show. Ticket prices here are approate especially given the times we are in. It is great to be able to see a movie for $5. The seats are great also all new and very comfortable. This theater has it all with out making you go broke.
(5)Gigi G.
I totally forgot to do a review last week... But hey... I'm here so shush.... This place is amazing.... Gives you a nostalgic feeling... Pianist playing relaxing soothing music before Puss in Boots started..... The chairs are sooo comfy... I wish it was a bit bigger, and more space in between rows.... But Tivoli is clean.... And tickets are dirt cheap... Parking is a bit annoying... It was raining last week, but overall.... A very nice theater...
(5)Candice G.
CHEAP!!! (In a good way, duh!) Has a live organ player - I could prob stop here and win you over but I'll go on. Cheap food, great location, giant screen, nominally priced tickets... I love it now, as an adult, and I LOVED it as a kid. Great family memories were made from going to Tivoli.
(5)Alex A.
"I'm dreaming of a White Christmas..." My wife and I attended one of the annual viewing of White Christmas at this classically ornate theater and had a wonderful experience. The organist and the vocalist (a local who has worked there for 30 years) injected positive energy into the crowd before the show started, and families and friends were able to share the joy of Christmas with a caroling sing-along. The goodies are reasonably priced, and you get refills on any size popcorn and/or drink! The seats are comfy and spirits are exceptionally high at this historical landmark, and we plan to bring our family here for years to come... Enjoy your visit! (Tickets can be purchased online, as well.)
(5)Natalie F.
How did I ever forget to write a review for the Tivoli!? I started to go to the Downers Grove location about 4-5 years ago. I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the look of this theater. Old school decor, live pre-movie organ player, free refills on soda and popcorn of any size, huge screen and the nice touch of a personal greeter. The staff is always nice. Great prices and PLENTY of seating. This place is just true to the art of cinema!! Beautiful piece of movie theater/history. I still need to get my parents there. They will just die when they see how pretty this place is. I hope they continue on for many years to come. Great movie memories here. Cheers!
(5)Laura G.
I've been going here since I was a little girl and can honestly say its my favorite place to see a movie! Another close theater boasts "the best seat in town" but the Tivoli easily surpasses. Did I mention it's got the best popcorn in the tri-state area, and free refills!
(5)Brandy W.
Read the comments before me... since they simply include all the goods, but I'll do a quick outline of all the things I loved: 1. Cheap! Movies vary, prices vary upon movie... 2. Nostalgic, beautiful inside. 3. Intimate, only one theatre inside playing one movie at a time. 4. While getting seated before movie, a LIVE organist plays, then disappears when movie starts. 5. Red curtain, beautifully old decor, perfectly restored. 6. Nice staff! 7. Next to Aurelio's-- awesome pizza joint and right next to the Metra station with tons of parking. That should give you good enough reason to check it out. I mean, $8 to see a movie still playing in expensive theatres for TWO people total on a Saturday night??? $8?

This gem is a beautiful old theater in the heart of Downers Grove. It still seats nearly 1000 with the large original size screen - one of few remaining in the Chicago area I presume. It has been beautifully restored also p- look up at the ceiling and the walls. The theater shows primarily second runs movies for about 1/2 price. Every other Monday night the theater hosts the After Hours Film Society afterhoursfilmsociety.com that features foreign, art, and independent films. Audience is older so you tend to get less teenage drama going on before and during the movies. Recent visit to Yorktown Theaters in Lombard actually inspired me to yelp about this. What a treasure we have in DG. On weekends and during the AFHS nights the organ comes up from the theater pit and you get a free half hour organ concert on an honest to 1930's theater organ. What's not to love about the place if you are over 21?

Top shelf~A Class. Clean friendly safe. We are luck to have this in our community. Always a great time.

Greatest cinema of all time. I've been going to Tivoli with my family for years and years (we're from Westmont!) and it's still as amazing as it was years ago. All movies are $3 which you can't complain about. You can go to a movie for less than $10/person and that includes a ticket, popcorn and pop! Candy also really cheap, but it'll bring you up to like $11 per person. :-) There's only one screen, but it's amazingly huge. The theater itself can fit a huge number of people. The times I remember it selling out: Titanic and Independence Day. Awesome. Maybe about 10 years ago, the owners decided to rehabilitate the theater itself, so there are all new, comfy seats as well as in-arm drink holders - genius. There's an abundance of parking (which I guess I only mention because I live in Chicago now and it's always an issue) and there's tons of shops around the theater so you can go to dinner or do some shopping before or after. Oh, and on Friday and Saturday nights (and I believe Sunday afternoons - but don't quote me on that) the organist still comes to play live music before the movie! His little organ is right at the front on the old stage of the theater and when his set is done, the organ retracts into the stage! Very vintage.

ONE GIANT SCREEN!?! Shut the front door. I haven't seen a theatre this size since I was a kid. I understand why they have all the mini-screens these days, I mean financially it makes sense, but WOW was it neat to go to a movie old-school sytle. The decor is a bit kitchy, but you don't even care when you see the size of this place. It is simply amazing. Plus, it's a cheap show! You can't lose. Oh, and my big test at a theatre that butters the popcorn for you...yes they did a great job with the extra extra butter. I know, I know, I'm popcorn obsessed. I will be going to movies here more often.
(5)Diana D.
For those of you are grew up in the area this was our "$1 theater". You still can't beat a $5 movie these days. They have down upgrades on their bathrooms and seating but this place has such a vintage feel like no other. I love it here and they still have the live organ player...can't beat that.
(5)Petras B.
This is going to make me sound old but I remember when the ticket prices were $1.50. They're now at $4 I think, which is still really cheap. Plus, this theater is huge and has the old nostalgia feel to it. It's beautifully restored and is kept up very well. Take a trip out here, you won't be disappointed. Edited: They have a digital projector now. (I think they got it in like 2008-2009.) It looks fantastic. Huge screen, comfortable seating, old style look with new technology. The Tivoli is my favorite theater.
(5)Elizabeth F.
I love this place!! I have to preface this by saying it's of those places worth visiting. I don't mean go out of your way to clear up your Saturday night to drive from the city to Downers Grove either. I mean if you are in the area it is a great place to see. That being said it is one of those places that is cheap. That has a unique quirky imperfection and great historical value. You children will have tons of fun and soo will your date. Unless they are snooty and frown upon over buttered popcorn and muggy air.

I can't help it, I'm a romantic at heart. That goes for my movie viewing as well, and if I still have the opportunity watch them in a nostalgic setting that takes me back to a time when movies really were magical, then I'm a happy guy. For this sole reason, I thank God for the Tivoli Theater. When I was there last, the organist welcomed everyone in with tunes from a by gone era, simply adding to the ambiance of my experience. The ticket prices were much cheaper than the normal theaters because the movies they're showing are second run. To be honest, I don't even remember the last movie I'd seen there, but that kind of proves my point because I certainly remember the theater. Next time, instead of checking your Netflix queue, check the showtimes at the Tivoli and see for yourself. Betcha two bits you'll agree with me.

Hands down the BEST movie theater EVER! $5 admission fee, classic architecture and the Organ Man gettin down before the show starts. For real! There is a man playing the organ on stage while people usher in! Such a great experience overall. We saw The Artists here and it paired perfectly with the vintage feel of this historic theater. Great date spot and being here redefines your movie experience.
(5)Tim C.
Best place to watch a movie in the 'burbs, here is why. Old school opulence makes brings you the specialness of yesteryear. Pipe-organ pre movie entertainment most weekends All the modern upgrades, digital Dolby, and digital projection. No sound from the screen next door 100s and 100s of your closest friends enjoying the movie with you instead of just a closet full. What people don't know Tivoli mostly first run flicks these days for bargain prices. Bonus is exercise you get dropping your girl or wife off, finding street parking and sprinting for the theater Enjoy
(5)Katherine B.
Great theater. Its prices are good, staff is friendly and everything is CLEAN. Their bathroom is so much cleaner than the full price movie theaters which is a big deal to me. I love the old atmosphere and the ceiling in the theater is beautiful.
(5)Dave C.
Had a Sunday night date with my sweetie and no kids. Went to dinner and a movie. Had not been to the Tivoli in years and was very impressed. $5 tickets to Argo and very comfortable new seats in a huge old theatre that looks great. Ticket takers, popcorn girl all very friendly. Even got a mint after the show. Highly recommend the Tivoli over Yorktown theaters. We had a great time and we will be back soon

I honestly don't think anyone could picture Downers Grove without the Tivoli theater. The flagship theater of the Classic Cinemas chain is everything you'd ever expect in an old cinema combined with the modern amenities of a modern megaplex. Modern amenities: everything here is updated; there's on-line ticket ordering, new concession equipment, modern bathrooms, digital projection, digital surround sound, digital pre-show ads, 3D movies, and a full light and sound board for live stage productions. Old style: If the fully-lit marquee doesn't grab your attention, then wait'll you walk inside! The huge lobby is just one example of the obvious effort and care that went into restoring this movie palace. Of course, the main attraction is the auditorium itself, adorned by an enormous gold-plated dome. Weekend evening shows always include a live pipe organ performance before the main event begins. While the theater obviously cannot play all of the latest releases (just one screen), they screen independent films (even those made by locals), classic Christmas movies, live televised events, and live stage performances. If you've never been to a Classic Cinemas chain, then you're also in for a real treat. Free refills on any sized popcorn and soda (yes, even the small), several promotions (gift certificates, free movies on your birthday, all kinds of coupons, and now the "Classic Rewards" program), and kid-friendly programs. Unlike several other Classic Cinemas locations, there is NOT a birthday party room here, but there is a bowling alley in the basement! Best of all: $4 per ticket. How can you beat that? I just bumped this rating from 4 stars to 5 because I used to complain about the parking; but ever since Downers Grove completed their downtown improvements, including construction of a great, free parking garage, I now have nothing to complain about at all!
(5)Chris S.
I don't know what else to say about this place that someone else hasn't already written. I love this place. The tickets are cheap, they offer refills on the refreshments, the seating is comfortable with plenty of leg room, and the sound is good. I think the best thing I like about the Tiv is that on a normal night I can get an unobstructed view of the screen. I mean, I don't even have to see part of the back of someones head. There is so much room in this theatre that there is always room to move to not have anyone in front of you. I also really like the older movies they show here. During the Xmas holiday season they have a number of holiday classics they screen on the weekends for no additional cost.
(5)Amelia V.
Beautiful theater, well kept, and extremely reasonable, price-wise. The staff is friendly and helpful. The snacks and drinks are typical of theater food, but good. No stale popcorn! It really is a fantastic movie theater - I will definitely be a more frequent patron. This place is a new favorite.
(5)kristen s.
I love the old fashioned feel of this place. Tivoli has been the place i've always gone. I'm way too cheap to go to the movies anymore, i don't feel like paying $20 for a ticket and a small popcorn; i just wait for them to come here. my favorite part is the organist before the show. it's better than listening to the same stupid commercials for half an hour. the dude is awesome and i haven't found any other theater that still has one.
(4)M S.
Went to see "a Kid and his bike" We had a great time. Free Parking, fun organ music, full house. I also love the vintage features of this original movie house! Also went to see the midnight showing of Jaws the other week. It was a lot of fun and some folks dressed up as RD and some had inflatable sharks with them. The staff that took your tickets and concessions stand were very friendly. (We also didn't have to sit through 30 minutes of product commercials and previews like they do at the AMC movie theaters.) The price was also affordable. I am going to keep spending my money here, locally, instead of the big box theaters. I also feel this same way about my hometown movie theater: The Lake, in Oak Park. This is also another friendly family local gem. Thanks, keep up the good work, and the vintage amenities.
(5)Tarra A.
This is a wonderful place for a first date. My boyfriend and I went here in February on our second date, but it was so much fun. What a great experience and a nice change of pace from the theaters of today. The inside is very beautiful, and as the reviewer Brandy said, very nostalgic. The price can't be beat! I'd also recommend this venue for a simple night out with a loved one/significant other/friend. Great place, great little town and great atmosphere. Within walking distance, you will also find Caribou & Starbucks, a Giordano's pizza, an Aurelio's pizza among other little fantastic boutiques. Come to think of it...it would be a perfect area for a Girls' Night Out. You can do beauty stop, food stop and movie!
(5)Mark C.
I remember why I love movies when I go to Tivoli. While every other theater adds newer, bigger, fancier (and much more expensive) amenities, Tivoli stays true to the art of cinema. It's refreshing to see a movie in a place that isn't influenced by popular culture. I love seeing classic movies here and experiencing it in a comfortable, family-like setting. The organist before the show completes the package.
(4)Allison E.
I just saw Avatar in 3D for $6. How awesome is that!!? What a lovely theater. Totally old fashion. Like when my grandmother first saw Gone with the Wind. I love the crown molding, the decor, the lights. Makes me think of old Hollywood. But nostalgia aside, I had a great time. The place seats like a billion people and the sound and picture quality was quite good. Although its a vintage theater, the seating is all new. So, comfortable, and that had those arm rests that fold up so you can snuggle with your date. Since I was alone, I just snuggled with myself. But, If I did have a date, I could have snuggled. I would go again. Whats not to love?

The Tivoli Theatre is absolutely one of the most beautiful and well kept theaters that I have been to in many years. My son and I went there for a live concert and I was really awed and impressed by how beautiful the architecture was. The theater has been restored to it's 1928 splendor, from the dressing rooms, stage, seats, to the gold leaf and paint of its' decorative elements. Apparently, according to it's website, "The Tivoli Theatre, located in downtown Downers Grove, was the first Classic Cinemas theatre. The theatre pre-dates Classic Cinemas by 50 years, having opened on Christmas Day 1928 as one of the first theatres in the country built to show "talkies"." The staff on duty was attentive and friendly. They really went the extra mile. The show was well organized, and the sound system also rocked. The Tivoli was built as one of the first "sound" theatres in the country, and it has the capabilities of 48 channels of mixed sound, a 3 manual 10 rank Wurlitzer theatre organ, Dolby Digital sound and an HPS4000 sound system with the acoustic power of 10 symphony orchestras. Another interesting fact about this theater? It is equipped with a listening system for the hearing impaired for movies AND live shows. I would definitely return here for a movie some time. Their refreshments are pretty cheap compared to most theaters theses days and...refills on drinks and popcorn are free.
(5)Luci D.
I live in the city, but had reason to visit this theater when they played "It's A Wonderful Life" recently. It's beautiful, there was an organ player for pre-film entertainment, and (I think) free refills on popcorn. Everything I could say has already been said. This theater deserves your patronage!
(5)Erin M.
The Tivoli is a classic era movie house for all your favorite talking pictures. It has a balcony and some absolutely fantastic decor. It's an absolutely beautiful old school cinema that has been brilliantly restored. It's a great place to see just about any movie and it has such a wonderful feel to the entire facility. There aren't too many olde time movie theatres around and this is truly one of the best!
(5)Shelly M.
This is my favorite theater ever! I try to see as many movies here as possible. The theater is beautiful inside and it will make a boring dull movie a more enjoyable experience. Its also not as expensive as your chain theaters and you get a lot more for your money. I would recommend this theater to anyone.
(5)Sarah R.
How can you not love the Tivoli?! This place has great atmosphere and cheaper, 2nd run movies. The hubby hates going to the movies but will make an exception for this theater. I'm on the lookout right now for the movie we both really want to see. As soon as it comes to the Tivoli we are going!
(5)John B.
I've never seen a movie here, but many years ago I worked with a children's theater company that performed out of this theater. The screen rises to reveal a decent size stage, and the footlights are still used as "curtain warmers." I imagine that early in its career -- which dates back to 1928 -- this theater was used for vaudeville performances in addition to movies. It's a beautiful old house with great acoustics and a huge lobby, all of which was restored through the mid-70s and 80s. There's even an organ, though it's not the original instrument. Tivoli Trivia: There are dressing rooms downstairs from the stage, and you can navigate through the basement to Tivoli Lanes Bowl, which is around the corner on Warren.
(5)Sheila C.
This theatre sets the bar too high for any other theatre to compete. From a personal greeting when you purchase your ticket to an employee handing out mints when you leave (to cover up my wonderful buttered popcorn breath) this facility is without rivals. Going to a movie at the Tivoli reminds me of the real reasons I adore movies.
(5)Maria S.
The Tivoli will always hold a special place in my heart. I'm glad it's still around so that my husband and I can see movies here. Shh, don't tell the big movie studios, but sometimes I'll wait for the big summer blockbusters to show up at the Tivoli just so I can watch them on the giant screen.
(5)Michael T.
Nothing to dislike and have very fond memories of this theater growing up. Cheap tix and good popcorn.
(5)Scott K.
Hearing Supertramp's The Logical Song played on a pipe organ before the movie is a new realm of awesome.
(5)David S.
This is a special place. I have been going here since I was a kid. They have kept up. Nice sound, I think people are shocked to hear the booming audio here. Beautiful old school theatre. Does not play the "brand new" movies but within a few weeks. Beautiful old theatre that costs $4 bucks, how can you beat it!! Nice seats, very comfortable and you can flip the armrest to be next to your wife/date/s.o. For me it always seems like a treat to go here and it takes me back. One of the "hoots" here is that you can park in back lot and when the movie gets out you can head out the exit close to your car and not head back through the lobby. Enjoy! Great value, great time!
(5)Jessica W.
Best place to see a movie anywhere in the western suburbs. The theater is gorgeous, a beautiful piece of movie history. The price is right, $4 per ticket, or $6 for a 3d movie. The concessions are affordable, and best of all, unlimited free refills on ANY size. Plus there are always great events going on, like book signings and the After Hours Film Society every Monday night. Everyone should go to the Tivoli as often as they can.
(5)Dino D.
You can't beat this place.... the price, the seats are very comfortable and best of all fresh pop corn with free refills. Great place to see it all and good food is just a stroll down the street
(5)Michelle K.
I love the old-fashioned feel of this place, and tickets are cheaper here than you'd find at most other Chicago-area theatres. The interior is so beautiful, it's been brilliantly restored and has a lot of personality. I have lots of pleasant memories of walking here with my family to see movies when I was younger!
(5)Leanne M.
This is a world-class theatre, and world class for only 3 bucks. I believe it was the second "talky" (i.e. movies w/ sound) theatre in IL. How cool is that? The GIGANTIC single-movie theatre historical painted architecture, with the pre-show organist are what make Tivoli a treasure to experience. AND- the METRA drops off right across the street. So, no excuse not to visit from the city on the weekend with a $5 roundtrip weekend pass! (food, bowling, and classic downtown near too.)
(5)Linda W.
This is one of those old, original, ornate theaters that take you back in time. In addition to standard movie offerings (a couple weeks after other theaters) the Tivoli also has its' share of special events - book signings, lectures, and old movies getting the big screen treatment (i.e. It's a Wonderful Life at Christmas). It's a great place to go on a date or with the kids. I'm glad it's here!
(4)Jessica L.
Awesome! Their prices have gone up a little bit after renovations but it is still an awesome deal! It is $5 for a ticket the theatre is beautiful and clean (even the bathrooms)! All popcorn and drink are reasonably priced AND free refills! Going to the Tivoli makes me feel like I am going to an old theatre because, well it is an old theatre! The service is wonderful, the ceiling is spectactular and they offer you mints as you walk out! It has been this way for as long as I remember and I have been going there since I was a kid and the ticket was $2! Also, you can join online to get a classic rewards card and get points at all classic cinemas (like ogden 6 where I go f Tivoli isn't playing the movie I want to see!). I even found my Grandma's old diary where she talks about going to the Tivoli with my Grandfather..how romantic and amazing! :)
(5)Emily C.
Great historic theatre and somewhere out of the ordinary to go, if they are playing something you enjoy. Directly across from the train station so you can take the train in from out of town, stop at Downers Grove Main Street I believe. This reminds me of the theatres back east I grew up going to before they cut the screens in quarters, segmented off the large rooms and sent to multi screen showing. You are in for a great show.
(4)Enna S.
Great place. FREE REFILLS ON POPCORN AND SODA, GIANT screen (I dunno who said it was small, they need their eyes checked). Great price, great atmosphere, all around a great place.
(5)Margaretsen H.
I love theaters. I even started a movie theater society. I finally got over to this place. It is a hidden gem. Very clean. Great seats and sound system. There is a plaque saying that is was the second theater in the U.S. specifically built for sound movies. That is pretty cool.
(5)David H.
I haven't been to the Tivoli in forever but I will always remember it. PERFECT Old Tyme Theatre. Red Curtain, back in the day they had an organist/penist play before the show started, not sure if they still do that but it was cool. The popcorn is always fresh and hot! And this is a dollar show so tickets are cheap not quite new releases but a month or two old. I really need to get my ass back to this place...
(5)Dee W.
$3 movie theatre tickets! Enough said! IT's a beautiful theatre and brings back many childhood memories. They only show one movie at a time so you have to keep your fingers crossed and hope that they're playing something that you enjoy.
(5)Susan C.
This is such a beautiful theatre! It takes you back in time! I hear it is now the 2nd oldest theatre in the US. A must see. Especially around Christmas! I'm so proud with have such an historic place in our beautiful town!
(5)Shannon M.
Truly a gem in the heart of Downers Grove. Step back in time and enjoy a live organ before the show! This theatre is "worth the drive" and not to be missed! A night at the Tivoli makes for a magical evening!
(5)Cheryl P.
Best memories of my childhood include the Tivoli!
(5)Jason H.
You cannot go wrong here. This place IS cheap and they DO show pre-dvd release movies, but so what. They have totally restored this beautiful old theater. It is awesome. They even have an organ player come out of the floor. Why pay 10 bux a ticket at AMC to have some jerks talking and kicking your seat. I never go to the big ticket movie thaters anymore. Not until they can shut the people up!! The Tivoli (pronounced TI-voh-li) Note: TI is emphasized, not vo. They are right of the metra and right across the street from Ice Cream and coffee, and right next to Pizza and bowling. Support this great theater and preserve history.
(5)Sandra E.
I've lived in Downers for 3.5 years and the Tivloi is a supreme theatre experience. From the reasonable price of a ticket, to the great popcorn and pop with free refills and the amazing organ interludes on the weekends. The decor is so amazing, what a theatre should really be like. I also attend some special performances, concerts, ballets, etc. and its just a great place to have fun. When someone visits me from out of town, I take them on a tour and show them the amazing ceiling of the Tivoli.
(5)Lizzi C.
Really nice theater! I felt like I should be dressed up when I walked in! There's only one screen and it's kind of small compared to the size of the room, so I suggest sitting up front and center. There's a movie club that meets every week to screen different films. Affordable ticket prices. Just go to see how charming it is!
(4)Brian D.
Cute theater next to the train station. Has arthouse movies as well as mainstream releases. Worth a visit!
(5)Booda B.
Go Tivoli! Gorgeous theater, huge screen, cheap tickets and refreshments, live organ music - what more could you want in a movie theater?
(5)Tim M.
The Tivoli is a gem of a theater, beautifully restored to look much the same as it did in the 1920s. The moviegoing experience here is far better than you'll get at any gigantic cineplex, and tickets are only $3. It's well worth a trip.
(5)Dorothy S.
Who doesn't love the Tivoli? When I moved up to Chicagoland from Florida back in 2000 I was so happy to be near a cheap seat movie theater. And this one is actually nice, in fact it's beautiful inside. I just saw Superbad there this afternoon. Missed the organ player b/c I was there too early and that sucks b/c that's one of the wonderful things about the Tivoli. When I was there a few weeks ago to see Live Free or Die Hard it was packed! The concession line stretched all the way to the ladies restroom but it moved very quickly and I had my free popcorn refill in time for the previews. Oh yeah, another bonus - free refills on all size drinks and popcorn.
(5)Robyn C.
The Tivoli is a fun place. We love the organist also. Great for the kids to see what theatres used to look like. We like going to see the classics also on "off nights" and they have a Monday Night "After Hours Film Society" that plays independent/classics. Get there early for your movie. The best parking is around the corner (across from the bowling alley) and the lines get very long for ticket purchase/popcorn.
(4)Lindley E.
Beautiful old tyme-y theatre with updated seating. Pipe organ, gilt, heavy velvet curtains are the perfect frame for a theatre or film spectacle. This impeccably maintained movie house cum theatre is a true gem - and one that should make anyone living in Chicago jealous.
(5)Kris Z.
It is great having this theatre in DT Downers - I hope it doesn't close like so many others. They have great matinees during the week and many fun events for the kids. It is older but well-maintained with character on the inside. An awesome place to take the kids to see a movie!!
(4)Chris B.
Great place to see a cheap "second run" movie. Tickets are somewhere around $3 . This theater is a classic. Everything inside is ornate, from the carpet to the ceiling in the theater itself. The best part is the guy playing the organ before the movie. Sure, the run of the mill pre-movie nonsense is playing up on the screen, but there is no sound except a guy playing his heart out on a classic pipe organ. Just before the movie, he and the organ disappear into the floor to applause. Very unique.
(4)B. L.
This really is a classic old theatre. It's great for second run films. They sometimes have special events here. I was here for their 70th anniversary celebration that featured the always hilarious "A Night at the Opera" by the Marx Bros. They had a pipe organist and guys dressed like the Marx Bros. parading thru the aisles. It was are really good time and a treat to be in this beautiful theatre.
